Gladys Laura Baulk was born on 24th April 1909 at Slough in Buckinghamshire, daughter of Annie Baulk, formerly Symonds, and her husband Joseph Baulk, a roadman. They did not stay in Slough for long after Gladys' birth; by the time of the 1911 census the family was living at Redbourn in Hertfordshire, where they lived in a four roomed house at North Common.

Gladys was married in 1931 to Alfred Lewis from the nearby town of Luton. They had a daughter in 1931, whose birth was registered in the St Albans district which included Redbourn, and a son in 1932 whose birth was registered in Luton. It would appear they lived with Alfred's mother and siblings in Luton for a while early in their marriage, appearing in both the 1932 and 1933 electoral registers at 29 South Road in Luton.

Some time between 1933 and 1939 they left Luton and moved to Bletchely in Buckinghamshire. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Gladys and Alfred were living at a house called "Alfreda" on Drayton Road in Bletchley. Alfred was working as a tailor at W.O. Peake's factory and also served as an air raid precautions warden.

Alfred died in 1986, aged 80. Gladys outlived him by nearly ten years. She died in the Haverfordwest area in Pembrokeshire on 29th March 1996, aged 86.
