Gilson was landagent for the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire of Derbyshire for 27 years at Chatsworth Estate. He was also landagent for Hardwick Hall, Staveley and a couple of others. He was buried with his wife and daughter, Mary Kathleen, on the Chatsworth Estate in St Peter's churchyard.
