!1816: Vigilance over the Carter lands was still apparent in 1816, when Gillies Thompson became engaged to Mary Landonia Carter. He was required to sign a marriage agreement in which he relinquished all claims to Mary's share of the Carter estate. He also agreed that should there be no children of their marriage, his wife's estate would go to the nearest Carter relative. 4 Two children, however, were born of their marriage, a son, Charles, who died shortly after birth, and a daughter, Mary Frances Landonia, born in 1817, and named after her aunt Fanny Law and her mother, Mary Landonia Thompson. Gillies died around 1819, and his wife, Mary Landonia about a year later.
