Gideon was the son of David C. Hopping and Mary Hopping.
He was united in marriage to Sarah Jane Sturgis on 30 Oct 1817, Warren County, Ohio.
They traveled by horseback to Illinois in 1823. They settled on the banks of Otter Creek, just outside Vermont, Illinois.
Six children were born to this union.
