Gertrude was shot and killed at Princeton Fairgrounds by Sylvester Grubb, a suitor. Gertrude was laid out on a bed in a roped-off area (like a museum). She was 19 years, 1 month, 22 days old when she was killed.

Grubb was hung on the corner by the Courthouse in Princeton, Indiana.
