Gerit was named for his Grandfather Becker. Gerit & Elizabeth came to Wisconsin in October of 1849. They had one daughter and eight sons, six lived past infancy. They came to Wisconsin via the Erie Canan and the Great Lakes from Schoharie County, NY. Gerit became homesick for NY, but after ploughing a long furrow on his farm without striking stones, his homesickness ended. In New York. stones abounded.
