Our dear husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend, Gerard F. Vanderhooft, 55, passed away on May 13, 1993 at his home from cancer.

Born Feb. 4, 1938 in Arnhem, The Netherlands to Peter G. and Elisabeth J. Vanderhooft. Immigrated to the U.S. with parents, sister and one brother in 1948. Married Else-Marie Fedje in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, May 12, 1961.In 1955 Gerard received a Ford Foundation early admission scholarship to the University of Utah. Graduated with honors, 1958. Graduated from U. of U. Medical School, 1962. He completed his internship at Balboa Naval Hospital, San Diego, Calif. Attended school of aviation medicine, Pensacola, FL. Flight-surgeon in the Navy. Chief Medical Officer at Johnsville Naval Air development center, Johnsville, PA. Orthopedic surgery residency, University of Utah Medical School. One year hand-surgery fellowship, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland. Practiced orthopedic surgery and hand surgery at Granger Medical Clinic for eight years. Private practice in association with West Valley Orthopedic Clinic from 1979 to Nov. 1, 1992.

Member American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, Western Orthopedic Assoc., American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, The American Medical Association and Utah Medical Assoc. Several positions held include: Assistant Chief of Orthopedic Surgery, Veterans Hospital, SLC.; Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, U. of U. Medical School; President Utah Orthopedic Assoc., President Utah Chapter of Western Orthopedic Assoc.; Program chairman National meeting of Western Orthopedic Assoc.

Gerard was an avid reader, fly fisherman, tennis player and golfer. He traveled extensively to foreign countries, but preferred to spend time at his ranch on the Strawberry River. He had a great appreciation for the outdoors, especially when camping and fishing with his two sons. On his epitaph he wants one word, "River."

Gerard is survived by his wife, Else-Marie, four children, son, Dr. Eric and wife Dr. Sheryll Vanderhooft, Seattle, Washington; daughter, Lisa and husband Scott Spurrier; son, Peter and wife Linette; daughter, Ann Elizabeth and fiancee, Stan Hansen, all Salt Lake City; four grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Whitney and Zachary Spurrier, Peter Nicholas and Christian Andrew Vanderhooft; parents, sister, Aty (Leon) Clyde, brothers, Joluut (Szifra) Vanderhooft, Jan (Louise) Vanderhooft, uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by grandparents and a sister. Gerard will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 12 Noon, May 18, 1993 at the Mt. Olympus North Stake Center, 4176 Adonis Drive (3725 East). Friends may call at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 So. Highland Dr. on Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10:30-11:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
