Gerald Klyn, 84, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday night, February 18, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.
He was born March 7, 1924 in Marion County near Otley, the son of Gerrit A. and Katherine Vander Wiel Klyn, the third of 13 children.
On March 14, 1946, he was united in marriage to Margaret M. Stam at Oskaloosa. Together they farmed for many years, first near Tracy, then various farms northeast of Oskaloosa, and finally purchased a 160 acre farm and later another 80 acres, and also, for many years, had a dairy and hog operation.
In 1982, Margaret’s health declined and Gerald stepped back from fulltime farming to care for her. In December of 1987, they built a home in Oskaloosa, and they moved into town.
They were charter members of Bethel Christian Reformed Church, and Gerald had been an elder and taught Sunday School, and had been on the boards of the Oskaloosa Christian School and the Pella Christian High School at various times. Gerald was also involved in Crossroads Bible Institute. Gerald was a faithful and dedicated husband and caregiver, and deeply loved his family. He enjoyed farming and visiting with people.
His family includes his wife for over 62 years, Margaret of Oskaloosa; their children: Gary (& Mary) Klyn of Pella, Martha (& Edwin) Meinders of Leighton, Alvin (& Verna) Klyn of Oskaloosa, and Linda (& Craig) McCreery of New Sharon; 12 grandchildren: Mike (Lorie) Klyn, Mark Klyn, Jonie (Chris) Arends, James Meinders, Jonathan (Jocelyn) Meinders, Jeremy (Jodi) Klyn, Ryan (Jamie) Klyn, and Chad and Tyler Klyn, and Jessica, Joshua, and Jennifer McCreery; 6 great grandchildren;
8 brothers: Arthur Klyn, Raymond Klyn, Marion (& Glenda) Klyn, Lawrence (Valda) Klyn and Lester (& Linda) Klyn, all of Pella, John (& Lois) Klyn of New Sharon, and Marvin (& Phyllis) Klyn, and Sidney (& Mary) Klyn all in Michigan; and 2 sisters: Sylvia Langstraat and Marjorie (& Arthur) Sneller, all of Pella.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; a brother in infancy; and a sister: Ruth Vande Wall.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 21, 2009, at 1 p.m. in the Bethel Christian Reformed Church, Oskaloosa, with the Reverend Marvin Leese officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa.
