OBITUARY: Weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning. Georgia Emma Shoffner May, died February 9, 2005, at Edgewood Place following an extended illness of Alzheimers and Parkinson’s disease. Born in Guilford County February 18, 1920 to John Thomas and Nora Greeson Shoffner, she was the fourth of nine children. She married Kenneth May March 27, 1937. Their house was built in 1938 and they lived in that home until she fell and broke her hip December, 2003. According to Georgia’s wishes the Reverend Dermont Reid, a special friend who took Georgia and Kenneth on many trips to pick strawberries or get apples and peaches from the orchard, will conduct the service, assisted by the Reverend Ben Bishop. She was an excellent seamstress and created many beautiful outfits for her family and friends. She also loved flowers and her garden. Her admonishment when you left their home was You’d better watch that road, the police will be looking for that kind of car. She is survived by husband, Kenneth; children, Geraldine Madison (Bob) of Columbia, S.C., Sandra Moore (Buddy) of Burlington, and Ken May, Jr.. (Kay) of Chapel Hill; grandchildren, Charles Moore, Neil Moore, Dawn Walker, Mark Madison, Stephanie Armand and Chris May; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Jordan and Max Walker, Jacob, Patrick, Beverly and Christopher Moore and Bryson May; brothers, Richard Shoffner (Mildred), Thomas Shoffner (Lorena), Leonard Shoffner (Sara Lou); sisters, Lib Staley, Swannie Johnson, Maggie Lea Coble (Paul), Mazie Coulman (George) and Osa McAdoo; sisters-in-law, Virginia May Corbett (Clyde) and Clara May; numerous nieces and nephews. The family extends its deepest gratitude for all the support and care from family and friends. You made our journey easier. Special love and gratitude to Virginia Corbett, David Eubank, Clara May and Richard Shoffner for their steadfast commitment during her illness. Very special thanks to the entire staff at Edgewood Place for being a part of her family this past year. Tonya, Sharon, Clara, Linda and others will always be remembered as will her only caregiver at her home Lillian Flowers. Her roommate, Estella Belton, has been such a joy to us all and we are grateful to Estella for keeping a watchful eye on Georgia. Thanks to Hospice for their time and support. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kenneth N. and Georgia S. May Scholarship Fund at the Dental Foundation of North Carolina Inc., UNC School of Dentistry, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599-7450. A scholarship will be awarded to a D.D.S. student each year.
