1890 - Baptism: George Edward, son of Frederick Thomas WOMACK, farmer, and Emma Smith, of Ovington.

1891 - With parents at Church Farm, Ovington. Scholar, aged 10 months.

George Edward WOMACK, known as Edward, came to Australia just before the First World War with a horse. He was taking it to a family of Graziers (by the name of Cotterel) in Southern Australia. War broke out while he was in Australia and he joined up over there.

George Edward belonged to the 1st Light Horse Regiment and he joined on 26 August 1914, in Sydney. His Regt No was 196. A British War Medal was awarded and also a Victory Medal. A Memorial Plaque was sent to his father in Norfolk and a Memorial Scroll to a Mr H T WOMACK in England.

George was 5'8" in height, weight 10 stone, fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair and a scar on his right thumb. Effects that he left behind upon his death were a mirror, bible, Cigarette Lighter, Cards and Letters. His name is on the Lone Pine Memorial in Turkey, Grave reference No 2.

The LONE PINE MEMORIAL stands on the site of the fiercest fighting at Lone Pine and overlooks the whole front line of May 1915. It commemorates more than 4,900 Australian and New Zealand servicemen who died in the Anzac area - the New Zealanders prior to the fighting in August 1915 - whose graves are not known. Others named on the memorial died at sea and were buried in Gallipoli waters. The memorial stands in Lone Pine Cemetery.
