Vann, Volume 4, p. 25-26. George Will's death was recorded in a written account by the mother of historian John Wayland. She wrote, "General Devon's command passed down here burning mills, barns and some homes. Old George Will at Pine Church died that night." This was the evening of 7 Oct 1864. Death records indicate that he had the "fever". George was the son of John and Susannah. He is mentioned in the will of his father that appears in Will Book I on page 47. George Will is believed to have been married twice. His first wife may have been named Catherine as some of his children list their mother as Catherine. These children were born prior to his second marriage. He was married on 13 Nov 1834 to Sarah Ruddell Jordan. Sarah was the daughter of Isaac and Susan. Isaac Ruddell (Riddle) married Susannah Loch on 20 Oct 1806. However, if Sarah's age is correct Susannah Loch Ruddell was probably not the mother of Sarah. Isaac Ruddell (Riddle) married Elizabeth Bowman on 6 Mar 1797. If this is the correct Isaac, Sarah may have been the daughter of Elizabeth Bowman Ruddell. Sarah Ruddell was married on 30 May 1818 to David Jordan. After David died, Sarah married George Will. James Ruddell was the bondsman for the marriage. In Shenandoah County death records there is the report of the death of an individual named Sarah Will on 17 Dec 1864. She died of the "dropsey". Her father was reported to have been Isaac Rudy. The father of the mistress of this household was Isaac Ruddell. The reader is encouraged to make their own judgement but the names Rudy and Ruddell are similar enough that it may have been an error in transcription.
