George B. Wardwell, 53, died unexpectedly Sunday while visiting in Union. He was born in Castine, son of George and Lora Leach Wardwell, and attended Islesboro schools. He served four years as a demolition expert with the Air Force. Upon his return to mid-coast Maine, he resided several years at Islesboro. Before retiring because of illness, Mr. Wardwell was a caretaker at Islesboro for the family of C. Douglas Dillon, Treasury secretary under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Mr. Wardwell moved here two years ago. Surviving are his wife, Sandra C. Legge Wardwell; a son, Adam L. of Limerick; three sisters, Patricia Hannan of Washington state, Norma Estes of Windham and Louise Dyer of Islesboro; and a grandson. A private funeral will be held.
