Warrant for land to heirs of George Tilley, 1819 Posted by: Gail R. Blancett Date: September 09, 2001 at 17:22:58

Bureau of Land Management records show the following:

Warrantee Name: George Tilley Patentee Name: Sally Tilley daughter & other heirs of George Tilley decd Scrip-Warrant Act of 1812

Issued February 15, 1819

for the NW Quarter of Section 29, Township 53 North, Range 22 W, 5th PM Meridian for land in Missouri which would become Carroll County

This was for his service as a private in Baker's Co., 44th Regt. of Infantry

I don't know if this was for Revolutionary war service, War of 1812 service, or just other war service. Nor do I know where this unit drew its men. It is clear that he was deceased by 1819. Was this George Tilley who was married to Charity Downs in Wake Co., NC on 26 April 1793?

I think Charity was a widow in 1820 living in Sumner Co., TN. Charity had a brother, Major Downs. A Major Downs also received a warrant for land in 1818 for service as a private in the exact same unit that George Tilley got a warrant. However, Major Downs patent was for land in Peoria Co., IL.

I'm looking for some confirmation that this is the same George Tilley and also looking for information on his children. Is there a deed in Carroll County which would say what happened to this land? Possibly the heirs sold the land and never moved there.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who is researching the family of George Tilley and Charity Downs. I believe some of their children may have gone to Franklin Co., IL between 1830 and 1840.

Gail
