Facts and Events
Research Notes from genealogist Suzanne L. Mendel, The Orchard, Main Road, Utterby, Louth, Lincolnshire LN11 0TQ, England. Record of christening found in Willoughby Parish register--Chr. 28 Jun 1747, George, son of William and Elizabeth Thorpe Record of marriage found in Coningsby Parish register, Lincoln Archives Office--Mar. 17 Dec 1776, George Thorpe of this parish & Mary Green o Revesby. By Banns. George Thorpe & Mary Green both signed. Witnesses: Samuel Bailey, Timothy Harris. (photocopy on file) Indexes to Settlement--Settlement certificate dated 30 May 1777, states that George and Mary Thorpe had Settlement in the parish of Revesby and were moving to Coningsby. (From 1691 anyone, but especially the working class, wishing to move from one parish to another had to obtain a Settlement Certificate saying that his parish of settlement would be responsible if he needed poor relief. Settlement in a parish was gained by birth, by various rent/rate qualifications, by being apprenticed to a parishoner or by serving a year in service in a parish. A wife took the Settlement of her husband.) Record of burial found in Coningsby Parish register, Lincoln Archives Office--Burial 24 Jan 1832, George Thorpe of Coningsby, aged 85. It appears that George Thorpe, who was christened in 1747, did not die in the Willoughby parish and he did not marry there either; therefore, he probably left the parish. George Thorpe was only two years old when his father died and 14 years old when his mother died, in 1761. The is the usual age of apprenticeship and it is possible that George was sent out of the parish to be apprenticed, in 1761. References
