Personal History

1905 - Birth: George Thoburn was born on November 18, 1905 at Palmerston St, Sarnia, Ontario. Source is his 1905 Ontario birth registration. NOTE: The Saskatchewan Residents Index incorrectly lists him as being born in Clair, Saskatchewan.

1906 - Census: On July 14, 1906, baby George Thoburn II was living with his father, George Thoburn 30 and mother, Barbara 26, and grandmother, Mary McNiven 68 on the homestead near Quill Lake, Saskatchewan. Source is 1906 Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

1909 - Murder: On November 1, 1909, when George Thoburn II was almost 4, his father, George Thoburn, his mother, Barbara Matilda Thoburn and his maternal grandmother, Mary McNiven (nee McLean) were all murdered by their hired man, John Mescei 20 on the homestead near Clair, Saskatchewan. Source is The Wadena Herald, November 4, 1909, #45 page 1. George and his sister Mary were taken to live with their mother's sister Annie Thom in Wadena, Saskatchewan for a few months. Source is Mary M Irwin's Memoirs, unpublished. John Mescei was tried in Saskatoon and executed on March 10, 1910 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Source is National Archives Canada, 1994.

1911 - Census: In June, 1911, George Thoburn 6 was living with his foster parents, Alex Thom, 40 and Annie Thom 36 (his aunt) and their 2 daughters: Mary (Mamie) 7 and Edith 4 on Railway Ave in Wadena. Alma Thom 18, a cousin, was also living with them. Source is 1911 Census of Canada.

1916 - Census: On June 6, 1916, George Thoburn 10 (listed as adopted son with Thoburn as his last name) was living with his adopted family consisting of father, Alexander 45, mother, Annie (listed as Annie Isabell) 41 and three sisters Mary Josephine 12, Edith Sarah (listed as Sarah Edith) 9 and Agnes (listed as Agnes Isabell) 4 on 2nd Street E, Wadena. 1921 - Census: In June, 1921, George Thom (now listed as son with last name Thom) 14 was living with his adopted family consisting of father, Alex Thom (listed as AK Thom) 51, Publisher, mother, Annie 46, and sisters, Edith 13 and Isabella 9 at 2nd St. East, Wadena, Saskatchewan.
