Facts and Events
Name George Sutherland, II
Gender Male
Birth? Abt 1695 King & Queen County, Virginia
Death? Abt 1748

SUTHERLAND, first generation, was probably GEORGE SOUTHERLAND, who died in 1701 and left three orphans to the care of Joseph Norment. (Ref. Journal of the House of Burgesses, page 283, "Thursday, September 4, 1701".)

SUTHERLAND, second generation was his sons: 1. Joseph Sutherland 2. Phillip sutherland 3. George Southerland II

Of George II, knowing that he still owned 200 acres jointly with his brother Phillip in 1720 could mean that he had not reached his majority at that time since it had been 18 or 19 years since his father died.

However, by 1722, George II would have been 21. In Virginia Patent Book #13, page 493, GEORGE SUTHERLAND patented 400 acres of land "in Va." 1725-1730, and we preume that it was in Henrico county, later Goochland County, since the next records of GEORGE SUTHERLAND are found in that county.

On January 12, 1732, GEORGE SUTHERLAND and wife, JUDITH sold to William Spurlock 200 acres of land in Goochland County. (Deed Book #1, page 368.)

On June 12, 1740, GEORGE SUTHERLAND and wife JUDITH sold to Robert Chowning, 150 acres of land in Goochland adjoining on one side a parcel of land retained by SOUTHERLAND. (Deed Book #3, page 313)

A bond in Goochland County, made April 19, 1755, between RANDOLPH DEPRIEST, WILLIAM DEPRIEST, GEORGE SUTHERLAND, and JOHN SALMON on the one part and JOHN HODGES on the other part reveals that JUDITH, the wife of GEORGE SUTHERLAND, was the daughter of WILLIAM DEPRIEST and his wife JUDITH. WILLIAM DEPRIEST died in 1738 and his widow, JUDITH is now married to JOHN HODGES: "...condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the abouve bound Randolph Depriest, William Depreist, George southerland and John Salmon have this day ageed with the said John Hodges who intermarried with the widow of William Depriest, deceased, and mother of the bouve bound, that the wife of the said John Hodges is to have one feather bed and the furniture thereunto belonging and one oron pit, part of the estate of William Depriest, deceased, and the above named.......Deed Bk #7, page 13.

1763: GEORGE SUTHERLAND II of Goochland county deeded to John Payne the land on which he, George Sutherland, was then residing. A wife does not sign this deed. (Will Bk. #8 pa ge 349, Goochland Co. Va.)
