1 NOTE !Residence: At birth - Bradford, YKS Working life - Long Ashton,SOM RELIGION: Christian - Religious Society of Friends. Was married 'according tothe usages of the Society of Friends' in Bainbridge, Yorkshire.

EDUCATION: Obtained scholarships enabling him to attend Bradford Grammar School and to become an undergraduate at Cambridge - Trinity Hall.

OCCUPATION: After graduating at Cambridge spent several years doing research there and in 1913 joined the Long Ashton Cider Institute, which later became the Long Ashton Research Station, a department of Bristol University. He could be described briefly as a pomologist, but his work for 50 years was concerned with the cross-breeding of fruits (apples, pears, blackberries,and blackcurrants in the main). His successful breeds were all named with the suffix Cross, e.g. Bristol Cross, Mendip Cross, Ashton Cross. Sadly, they have not found favour with the present day producers for the retail market.
