George Smith was baptised on 11th May 1817 at North Mymms, the son of Esther Smith formerly Sheffield and her husband William Smith, a labourer. The family's next child was born less than two years later in Luton - in later censuses only once did George accurately give his place of birth as North Mymms, all other times he claimed to have been born in Luton.

George was married on 7th April 1839 at Flamstead to Ann Seabrook from Hemel Hempstead. They settled at a place called Ainsworth Passage off Park Street in Luton.[7] They appear in each census from 1851 to 1871 at Ainsworth Passage. George worked as an agricultural labourer, whilst Ann was as a bonnet sewer and laundress.

George and Ann appear to have had eight children together, but six of them died as babies. Indeed, four of their children died nameless, presumably indicating a death very soon after birth.

Ann appears to have died in 1880, aged 63. George seems to have survived her by just over a year, dying in 1882, aged 64.
