Early Land Acquisition in Orange County, VA
Acquisition of Land from Orange County, Virginia Records:
- Indenture 22 Sept 1743 between Phillimon Hawkins and Sarah, his wife, of County of Spotsylvania, St. George's Parish and George Smith, alias Noblet, Parish of St. Thomas, Orange County... for sum of £30.. for 400 acres.. part of patent granted Joseph Hawkins, and by Joseph Hawkins granted to Edward rouse, by the saide Rouse sold to Samuel Smith, and by Samuel given his bond hearing date the 23rd day fo Jany 1732, and also given by the sd. Samuel to George, his son, by his last will and testament, which will divided the estate of Samuel amongst his children.. And the will being given unto the care of Stephen I. K. Smith, from whom the said will was stolen and destroyed.. which occasioned the said Phillimon Hawkins, and Sarah, his wife, to have the right to all the estate of Samuel Smith, being deceased, and Sarah, the only child that survived him that was born in wedlock.. land bounded as followeth: North Fork Northanna.. consists of one third part of Samuel Smith, dec'd, estate, the other land excepted, of all now in actual possession of George Smith, alias Noblet.. included negroes, horses, cattle, hoggs, beds and other household goods. . . . 6 August 1729 O.S., Page 335 On Motion of Benjamin Cave for More assistnce to help him keep his road in good repair (John Grame Gentn. refuseing to Send Collo: Alexander Spotswoods Tithables on the said road Pretending they all now belong to the Mines) It is Therefore Ordered that The severall Tithables belonging to the Sundry People hereafter Mentioned Viz : Majr: Goodrich Lightfoots, George Wheatleys, Thomas Stantons, John Bond, George Smiths, John Smiths, Thomas Parkes, Philemon Cavenaughs Quarter, John Gordons, Collo. Gawin Corbins four Tithables at his Quarter, Mr. John Grameís. and Collo. Alexander Spotswoods four tithables at his Chesnut Quarter (Provided that if the sd. John Grame gent. Send the same Number of Tithables belonging to Collo. Alexander Spotswood then ye sd. four Tithables belonging to ye sd. Chestnut Quarter to be Exempted from Comeing on ye sd. road) be added & Exempted from all other roads & that they help the said Cave Clear ye. said road and Keep the same in good repair -
6 February 1732 O.S., Page 181 The Honble: the General Courts order being Produced by Robt. Grame Gent about the old road from the Mountain Run to Beverleys fford to be again laid open and Cleared & repaired by the Tithables that Lives Most Convenient to the same and that the road from the upper side of the Mountain bridge Between ffrancis Thorntons & Lawrence Battailes Quarters to the Mountain Tract be Continued. It is Ordered by this Court that Anthony Scott be Overseer of the Said Old road from the Mountain Run to Beverleys Island ford And that the Tithables hereafter Mentioned Vizt. Abraham Feilds Colo _Carters Tithables at Normans ford, Colo. Beverleys, Capt. Greams, ffrancis Kirkley, William Paytons, Thomas Cook, James Ballard John Reed, George Roberts, Benjamin Roberts Andrew Glaspee, James Turner, George Smiths, Roger Oxford, John Haddox and George Sweeting, Do help the Said Overseer to make Clear & keep in good repair the said road -
