George Sharai is listed in the 1850 Berrien Co. MI. census as living with his Aunt Rebecca Wheeler Perham and her husband Liberty. George enlisted in Company L, Second Calvary on Sept. 21, 1861 at Niles, Mich. for three years at the age of 19. He was a private. He mustered out Oct. 2, 1861 and re-enlisted Jan. 5, 1864 at Mossy Creek, Tenn. Mustered March 29, 1864. George was wounded in action, his left thigh was amputated due to a gun shot wound of the left knee joint at Shoal Creek, Alabama on Nov. 6, 1864. George was discharged for disability on Sept. 18, 1865. At that time, he returned to St. Joseph, Berrien Co. MI.
