Facts and Events
George Herman Schade obtained his A.B. degree in 1930 from the University of Oregon where he also played varsity football. His doctorate in Medicine was obtained from the same institution in 1934. Followong a general internship in Portland, he came to the University of California Hospital for a pediatric internship in the years 1935 to 1937. During 6 months of this time he had the privilege of training under Dr. Olga Bridgman in the Pediatric Mental Health Unit, beginning an associatin with child mental health in the University that was to continue throughout his life. The warmth of his early relationship with his father and mother is probably reflected in his later approaches to mental health and behavior counslelling in childhood, in which area he was a distinguished and nationally known authority. George spent two years at the Child Guidance Clinic of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School as a Commonwealth Foundation Fellow under Dr. Frederick Allan. He returned to the U of California School of Medicine as Instructor in Pediatrics in 1941 and rose, over the ensuing years, to become Professor of Pediatric and Vice-Chairman of the department. His chief interest was child mental health and behavior. He was in great demand as a speaker, consultant, and teacher. He believed that competency in the more common problems of child behavior was necessary for the pediatrician and that pediatric care should be extended well into the years of adolescence. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting with his son, Arthur. Taken from a memorium on Dr. GH Schade, UofCal. References
