[Abst 76811 gives birth year as 1848, but all other records support his birth as 1849] The 1850 census shows George, age 2 , with his parents Berne Twp., Fairfield Co., Oh.[p 442 fam #147/160] In 1860 he is with his widowed mother, age 11, in Jefferson Twp., Polk Co., Ia.[p. 94, fam #742/677] 1870 shows him as the oldest at home with his mother, age 21, in Valley, Polk Co., Ia.[p 406 fam #96/106] Mary had been a school teacher. From a family group sheet, we see her parents are Charles W. (1820-1878 ) and Elizabeth (Hill) (1822-1911) Rhodes. Elizabeth lived with George and Mary in her later years. On the 1880 census, we find George, age 30, a farmer. Wife Mary, 27, is caring for their two children. (p 546 fam #215/220) By 1900 census, George, now 51, continues farming in Grimes, Polk Co., Ia. He and Mary, 47, are alone except for Mary's mother, Elizabeth Rhodes, age 78, who declares she has born 5 children, 4 alive at this time. She reports her parents b. Oh. Mary declares she and George have been married 28 years and she has born 2 children, both alive at this time.[p 290 fam #155/162] On the 1910 census, in Webster, Polk Co., Ia. George is now 61 and Mary is 58. She declares they have been married 38 years and that she bore two children, both living. Mary's mother, Elizabeth, now 89, is still with them . [ED 184, p 7B, fam #78/78.] We are told that George "was carried to the cemetery in a car." That HAS to be an interesting story! They are in Sec 2, lot 221, of Sunny Hill Cemetery, Grimes, Ia.[GPCem]
