George Lytle Perry 59, general yardmaster for the Illinois Central

Railroad here for 13 years, died suddenly while at work at his desk at the

yard office yesterday afternoon shortly after 3 o’clock following a heart

attack. His home here was at 310 S Elm.

Mr. Perry had suffered a chest injury when his car ran into a ditch

while he was enroute to the yard office about 40 minutes previous to his

death but whether the injury was instrumental in his death was not known.

A coroner’s jury last night at the Garnier & Sons Funeral home returned a

verdict of death due to a heart attack.

Enjoyed Good Heath

Mr. Perry had apparently been in good health, and according to the

members of the family had never complained of heart trouble.

He was born at Quincy June 1, 1880 the son of Mr. and Mrs. C L

Perry and graduated from Normal University May 1, 1899 . Following

graduation, he worked for the C&A Railroad for two years, then entered the

service of the Illinois Central in 1904 and had been employed by that

railroad since.

Mr. Perry began his career with the IC at Minonk, later served at

Normal, Bloomington and Carbondale before coming to Centralia as

assistant yardmaster in 1913. Thirteen years later he was given the

position of yardmaster which he had held since. He married Miss Mae

Meyer, of Centralia, Feb. 25 1908, in the residence at 310 S Elm street.

The couple lived at Carbondale for 4 ½ years previous to coming to

Centralia in 1913.

Belonged to Masons

He was a member of the Masonic organization, the Blue Lodge,

Shriners, Knights Templar, and a director of the Home Building and Loan

Co. He was also president of the Illinois Central Credit Union, and a

member of the Baptist Church at Normal.

Survivors include his widow Mrs. Mae Meyer Perry, an adoptive

daughter, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Barbee, his mother, Mrs. Ida Perry of

Normal, two sisters, Mrs. J E Hahn of Tacoma, Wash., and Mrs. E M

Newton of Springfield, and five brothers: Mark Perry of Freeport, Marion

Perry of Bloomington, Myron Perry of Chicago, Elbert Perry of Joliet and

Charles Perry of Milwaukee, Wis.

Services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Perry

residence, with the Rev Fred Young officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood

cemetery. The Masonic organization A. F. & A. M. will also hold a service at

the residence.
