Allegany Co. deeds, Liber H, Page 12, Nov. 26, 1814: transferred a tract of land of seven acres called "Walnut Bottom" from the estate of George Payne to one Thomas Thistle. This indenture was signed by Raphael Payne, Samuel and Sararh (Payne) Durbin, and Elias and Rachel (Payne) Arnold. This deed was recorded Feb. 2, 1815. George Payne had bought seven acres, a part of Walnut Bottom as deeded on May 11, 1791, from one Thomas Beall.

A Payne Family History records that Raphael Payne and his wife Winifred (Porter) Payne journeyed westward across the moutains to Knox Co., OH perhaps in 1818. The journey was made on horseback when their eldest child was very small. This daughter, Rachel, was born in Maryland on Apr. 9, 1818.
