Facts and Events
George Melville McGregor was the eldest son of George Frederick McGregor and Margaret Ellen Norwood. During the war he fought in Burma and he was a Chindit. For many years he ran the 4th Durham City Scouts but after his son George Ian McGregor died aged 11 on the 5th March 1951, George and Nancy had a total change of life style - they went into social work and worked at Medomsley. They were there just 15 months and afterwards ran a children's home in Newton Drive Framwellgate Moor from 1956 until 1963. They moved to a Boys Hostel in Stockton on Tees, looking after 17 deprived teenage boys, where they were Matron and Warden. They then moved to Brandon Observation Assessment Centre in 1971. This was a purpose-built assessment unit for severely disturbed children from 2 years to 16 years. In 1974 Nancy retired but George began working as a homes advisor working in County Hall in Durham. He retired too and had 11 months relaxation before his death 03/05/1978. He died of a sudden heart attack. |
