"George Leach, while residing in Fauquier County, Virginia, enlisted in 1777, and served as a bombardier in Captain Elias Edmunds' Company, Colonel Thomas Marshall's Virginia Regiment and was discharged in 1780, at which time his Captain Elias Edmunds was Colonel of the Regiment. He afterwards served in the Militia and was wounded at Williamsburg, officers not stated. His brother, Thomas Leach, served a tour of three months as his substitute."

    The father of the man for whom Leachtown was named was Captain George Leach; he was born, reared, and married in Eastern Virginia. He came to Wood County, then a part of Harrison, in 1805, by way of Wheeling.

    He came to Ohio about a year before his death and stayed with his son Thomas Whiting Leach.
