First Klingensmith family arrived in Mobjac Bay, VA on Oct 24 1700.

The ship name has come to be known as the London Galley. It was out of Gravesend probably in August this same year. It carried friends of Huguenots from England who could not return to France. This has to do with the rather long story of how the British got rid of a rotten King called James, and replaced him with William & Mary.

This Regent and his wife came from Holland with troops that included about 2 Regiments of Huguenots that fought valiantly and were rewarded by the British with trip to the colonies for their families and friends. Of the two Klingensmith brothers that had been saved years earlier from King Louis XIV of France, at least one, Joseph Jr. (who had married Unknown) was one of these Huguenot soldiers.

Andrew, his brother may have been also, but no evidence of that as yet. George Klingensmith, their son, was born 9 months to the day in Philadelphia.

To celebrate that date of arrival in America, Oct 24, we see in Westmoreland County, years later, that several Klingensmith couples have all of their babies baptized October 24, 1777.

    p.2, 1993.

Joseph Klingensmith Jr. was eight years old when he set foot on American soil. His children were the first Klingensmiths born in the colonies—George, born 16 July 1701; Margaret, in 1705; and Andrew, in 1707.

George Klingensmith married Anna Steltzmeier; some years later they moved westward, to the area around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Their six children, listed in the Bible that disappeared, were born either in Pennsylvania or Germany, depending on whom one believes as the first Klingensmith in the colonies.
