George was a veteran of the War of 1812, serving as a private with the Ohio militia, First Regiment (Delong's) - Capt. John Wiley's company of infantry from Aug. 30, 1813 to Jan. 13, 1814 and from Jan. 14, 1814 to March 2, 1814.

George and his family lived for a period before the War of 1812 in what is now part of Columbus, Ohio. Following the war, around 1820, the family moved into Marlborough Twp., Delaware County, which is now a part of Marion County.
