Personal History

George Edwin Kelts was born in 1863, the second of five children born to John and Marcia Kelts in Elk County, Pennsylvania. He lived a short life. The son of a millwright, he learned the trade and became a millwright himself, a choice that led to his death.

By the age of 17, George was working as a carpenter. When he was 23, he married Maggie Maxwell in 1886 in Wayland, New York, near a development under construction in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, where he was employed.

Three years later, George died in a sawmill accident in Forest County, Pennsylvania, in a mill owned by his brother-in-law Orman Sibley and George Himes, while his wife was pregnant with his second child.
