George Kammerer, although not a member, donated the first five-hundred dollars toward the building of the Catholic Church, and also helped to build it. He moved to Fremont Co., IA in the mid 1870's with his parents, John and Salome Bussard Kammerer. He and his son Elmer built many of the homes and churches in Imogene. One of their first needs was a Protestant church. In 1876, the Fousts, the George Kammerers, John Eastman and his wife Emaline (Kammerer), and D.S. Bussard and his wife, organized the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church with 16 members who met for worship in each others homes. In 1880, they built a small frame church one-half mile northwest of Imogene. The church and a successor building in Imogene served the Kammerer clan and neighbors for a century. George and Susan Scheibler Kammerer were married May 10. 1867 in Zwingle, Jackson Co., IA. With this union they were the parents of at least 12 children.
