Lived in Southampton George Husher was a Pilot with the London and South-Western Steam Packet Company, plying between Southampton and St Malo and Honfleur. He was the Master of a Packet Steamer. He had been Chief Mate on the "Waverley" which was sunk off the Casquet Rocks Jun 11 1873 and First Officer on the "Harve" which was sunk on February 16 1875. After losing his ship, he became Pier Master/Harbour Master at Victoria Docks, directing the tugs and living at the Custom House, later moving to a house on the pier head at Victoria Docks. George was first married to Mrs Wilmot, a widow with one daughter called Cis (known as Pip) from her first marriage. There were two children of George and the widow Wellman's marriage - George Henry Husher and Ada Husher. Subsequently to the birth of the children, George Husher's first wife died of Smallpox. He then married Miss Mary Jane Dyke; there were no children of this marriage. |
