About George Hobbs

George Palmer Hobbs was born 19 August 1915 in Baltimore, Maryland, son of Nimrod G. Hobbs (b. 1872) and his wife Sarah Hadaway (b. 1872), both natives of Maryland. George spent his early career in the food industry working for A&P Supermarkets while he was attending Baltimore City College, working at night. After he gratuated, George worked his way up to Store Manager, before moving over to the sales side of the business when he worked for Keebler Biscuit Company as a salesman. He spent nearly ten years at Keebler and during that same time served for three years in the United States Marine Corps, and met and married his wife Marie.

George's brother-in-law, Roy Justus worked for Rath Packing Company, and convinced George to join Rath as head of their canned meat department.
George quickly moved up through the ranks at Rath and six years later was promoted to east coast Division Manager of the consumer canned meat department. In 1955, Rath transferred George to Los Angeles to head up its canned meat division on the west coast. Four years later, he was promoted to Sales Supervisor of all Rath products in the Los Angeles area and then a year later he was named the Sales Supervisor in the San Francisco area.

Shortly thereafter, George saw an opporunity to join a new meat company in the Los Angeles area, the McCoy Meat Company, heading up its chain store sales for new products. George helped McCoy Meat get established in the Los Angeles market by getting its sliced packaged corned beef and pastrami products into many of the supermarket chains in Southern California. George progressed upward and was promoted to McCoy's National Sales Manager and later to Director of Sales. A few years later, George was convinced to re-join Rath Packing, and that is where he spent many years helping Rath become one of the largest meat packers and consumer meat product suppliers in the western United States.

During his food industry career career, George was among the founders of a local Southern California food-industry trade association, the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council (DDBC), an organization that still exists today in 2014. George was present in the early days of the Deli Council when the first meetings were held at Syd Fischer's house until the group was large enough to be held in a small dining room at the Roger Young Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles. George was first recognized by the Deli Council in February 1965 when he received its "Big Cheese" Award, when he was still working at McCoy Meat Company, and again later was recognized for his leadership in the Deli industry, when we was awarded with the Council's first "Supplier of the Year" Award in 1975.

In 1967, George Hobbs became the eighth President of the Deli Council and again proved his leadership capabilities in directing the DDBC's Board of Directors to a successful year. George continued to be an active supporter of the DDBC throughout the years and in recognition of that on-going leadership and support received the 1987 Deli Council "Hall of Fame" Award, posthumately, in January 1988.

George Hobbs passed away 6 May 1987 in Los Angeles County, California. George's leadership and contributions in the food industry have been remembered by his co-workers and friends in the food industry for many years to come.
