Overton Himmelwright, long active in local athletic undertakings, has been added to the list of those who will be honored at the Dapper Dan Club's sports-celebrity dinner on Sunday, January 22. Loman (Chad) Riley, president of the local chapter, said this morning that Dr. Himmelwright is being cited for his dedication in the protective interest of athletes. A native of Eckhart Mines, Dr. Himmelwright has been team physician at Fort Hill High since 1954 and has missed only seven quarters of football at the Sentinel school in the past five years. Dr. Himmelwright has been attending courses in sports medicine for a number of years and last fall spent two weeks on the practice field at Fort Hill upon returning from a sports medical school in Rhode Island. A graduate of Frostburg's Beall High, class of 1944, Dr. Himmelwright was not an active participant in sports. At the University of Maryland, he played first trumpet in the school's football marching band, as well as first chair trumpet in the university's concert band. Dr. Himmelwright received his B.S. degree at Maryland in 1950 and his M.D. in 1953. He served his externship at St. Agnes Hospital, Baltimore, from 1950 to 1953 and his internship at the same hospital, 1953-54. Son of Mrs. Mary Frances Tabler Himmelwright and the late Robert Leroy Himmelwright, he was born August 5, 1926. He is married to the former Naomi Lashey of Mt. Savage and resides at 133 Virginia Avenue. They are the parents of two daughters, Naomi Elizabeth, 12, and Georgia Ann, 9. A two-year veteran of the Navy, he is a past president of the Allegany County Medical Society and of the Allegany- Garrett Heart Association. He is currently serving a two-year term as president of the Maryland Chapter, American Academy of General Practice. A member of the sub-committee (medical aspects of sports) of the Medical Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland, he is on the staff of Memorial Hospital and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, U. of Maryland Chapter. Dr. Himmelwright is also a member of Grace Methodist Church, Potomac Lodge No. 100, AF&AM, Ali Ghan Shrine Temple and Jesters Court No. 117.

Published in the Cumberland Evening Times on Sep 16, 2005 was a very long obituary on Dr. George Overton "Doc" Himmelwright 79, of Cumberland when he died on Wed Sep 14, 2005 at Memorial Hospital in Cumblerland. Born Aug 5, 1926 in Eckhard Mines, he was son of the late Robert Leroy Himmellwright, Sr & the late Mary Frances(Tabler) Himmelwright. He was married to Naomi Elizabeth Lashley on Aug 16, 1947. Dr. Himmelwright is survived by his wife of 58 years, Naomi Elizabeth (Lashley) Himmelwright, at their home on Virginia Avenue in Cumberland. In addition, he is survived by two daughters, Naomi Elizabeth "Bea" (Himmelwright) Lamm, Cumberland and Georgia Ann (Himmelwright) Gross & husband Jeffery; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Ellen Lamm & Benjamin Lee Gross; one brother, Robert Leroy "Tubby" Himmelwright Jr. and his wife Lydia; and one nephew, Robert "Bobby" Himmelwright.
