    Obituary found by Dawn Kelley-genealogist

From The Waterloo Daily Courier, Waterloo, Iowa, April 28, 1902:

    Memorial Services

Funeral services in the memory of G.H. Crumrine were held at 2:30 yesterday afternoon at the First Congregational church, conducted by the pastor of the church, Rev. A. A. Tanner. It will be remembered that Mr. Crumrine was the only party in this section of the state who died of smallpox without other complications. His death occurred March 14, and owing to the nature of the disease which afflicted him, burial took place immediately thereafter. His family at the time were suffering from smallpox and it was impossible to hold services of any character. Mr. Crumrine's smallpox was of the black type and he was sick only a short time until he succumbed to the scourge. When the virulence of the disease was known, it was a difficult matter to procure the assistance of nurses outside the family and the mother, who was herself a victim of the disease, was compelled to administer to her children who were likewise afflicted.

Mr. Crumrine was born in East Waterloo township, December 21, 1861. He died March 14, 1902. Besides his devoted wife, he leaves five children: four daughters and a son. He also leaves blacksmithing and other special lines. He was an independent, all-around man and the master of many industries. The preacher stated that it was no small matter to have done his share of the world's hard work and do it uncomplainingly and in the best possible manner. He also said that the highest testimonial of the character of deceased was the words of the wife, who had stated that during their 15 years of married life he had never spoken a cross word to her. Mr. Tanner spoke of the influence of love in the home and among all humanity, saying that one does not begin to live until he begins to love. In explaining the sickness and suffering of humanity he said that God does not cause these things but permitted them for the purpose of bringing out the better qualities of the soul.
