Not much is known about George Cowan but he was mentioned in a few historical books and some probate records.

We know that George Cowan was married first to a woman by the name of Susan Brittian. They married on Jan 8, 1837 in Morgan County, Illinois. George and Susan had at least one son before her death, Benjamin Lewis "Ben" Cowan. He would later spell his last name as Cowand. He was born in 1838 in Henry County, Missouri. I believe Susan died by about 1840.

George Cowan married again on Dec 16, 1841 to Elender "Ellen" Gragg. The marriage took place in Van Buren County, Missouri which later became Cass County. In the History of Henry County it is mentioned that Ellen Gragg's father Malcolm Gragg and her brother Robert Gragg came to Walker Township, Henry County about 1839. George Cowan came to this area of Missouri at the same time. Possibly his first wife Susan died shortly after coming to the area and then he married Ellen Gragg in 1841.

Before his death, George and Ellen had three children. Mary Elizabeth Cowan born in 1842, Rebecca Cowan born in 1843 and Malcolm Bradshaw Cowan born in 1844. There is a probate record for the estate of George Cowan in Nov of 1846 in Henry County, Missouri. His brother in law John Gragg was the administrator of his estate. His father in law Malcolm Gragg was also mentioned. So George Cowan probably died sometime in 1846 in Henry County, Missouri. His widow Ellen Gragg Cowan remarried to James Roberts in 1848.
