- ↑ 2.0 2.1 2.2 2.3 2.4 George L. Coles Sr., age 86, passed away Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Harrisburg Hospital. He was a graduate of the former Wisconisco High School, employed by the Federal Government for 42 years, retiring in 1984. He was Army Veteran of World War II, from April 1942 to December 1945, having served in the Battle of The Bulge with the rifle brigade with the 4th Armored Division; served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, three service Medallions with five Bronze Stars and a Victory Medal. A military occupational specialist who worked as a cook, he was chef for General George Patton before the Normandy Invasion having served "The Last Supper".
He was a member of Halifax Senior Center; Lykens American Legion Post No. 124, Halifax V.F. W. Post No. 5750, Musician Union of Lebanon, Retired Public Employees of PA, A.F.S.C.M.E. Chapter 13, Sub-Chapter 9001, AARP, and AAA Auto-Club. A musician, accordion player, piano and keyboard entertainer, he played with Grand-PA Jones and Bobby Snyder Peach Basket, then with Missile Tones. He enjoyed cards, especially pinochle.
Mr. Coles was born February 7, 1924 in Wisconisco, son of the late George T. and Anna Laura Orr Coles. He is survived by his wife: Mary E. Shoop Coles whom he married on September 11, 1949; a son: George L. Coles Jr. & his wife Pam of Halifax; 2 granddaughters: Rebecca Lynn Duckett & her husband Jeffrey Whittier of North Carolina and Jessica Marie Coles of Mechanicsburg; 2 great-grandsons of North Carolina; a sister: Joyce Stuppy of Lykens; nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday June 4th at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, with Pastor Chris Heckert officiating. Military Honors by Lebanon V.F.W. Post No. 23.
