He was a farmer and operated a flat boat from Greensburg to New Orleans, according to "Kentucky: A History of the State", Battle, Perrin & Kniffen, 3rd Ed., 1885, Larue Co. He also owned slave property.
Four sons and one daughter were born to John and Martha Coakley.
