Christopher, to Miss Jane Mathews, and all without one drop of ardent spirits. [edit] Military Unit and DischargeThis company was organized at Floyd, La. and mustered into the service of the Confederate States on the 29th day of March 1862. It was organized for a six gun Battery and therefore four lieutenants were elected. Geo. A. Christopher was elected Jr. 2nd Lieutenant and his name so appears on the first muster roll of the company forwarded to the Secretary of War. He acted in the capacity of Lieutenant until the 14th day of July 1862. The company has only four guns. On the 14th of July Capt. Sanderson then commanding the company ordered Lieut. Christopher's name to be placed on the roll as a private, and detailed him as nurse at the Regimental Hospital, Cap. Sanderson in so placing Christopher's name on the muster roll acted I presume under orders from Col. Withers commanding the Regmt. The said Christopher is now present with the company in the capacity of private. He is forty two years of age in bad health, was elected Jr. 2nd Lieut. under the impression that this would be a six gun Battery, whereas it only has four guns. This statement is made at the request of the said Geo. A. Christopher. He denies to be discharged from service, and wishes this statement to accompany the Certificate of Disability for Discharge. Certificate of Disability of Discharge -George A. Christopher of Cap. Drew's Company "E" 1st Mip. Reg. Light Artillery was enlisted the 29th day of March AD 1862 to serve for three years or the war. He was born in the State of South Carolina, is 42 years of age, six feet five inches high, complexion fair, blue eyes, dark hair, and by occupation when enlisted a farmer. During the last two months, said soldier has been unfit for duty. Said soldier has suffered with disease ever since he was enlisted, and at no time in my opinion since his enlistment has he been able to discharge the duties of a soldier. I certify that I have carefully examined the said G. A. Christopher of Company "E" of Capt. Drew's Company "E" Withers Reg. Light Artillery of Mip. Vol. and find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of Harmorrhoids & Chronic Diarrhea which prevents him from walking, riding on horseback or from lifting weight, or handling the gun. Some eight years since he was operated on for Festuls in and since which time he has been troubled with haemorrhage nearly every day, and for the last two year this discharge has been larger than before that time, which now amounts to a sufficient quantity to keep him weak and debilitated. I should therefore recommend that he be discharged from the service. References
