Based upon the following post, George MAY have been married twice to Jane Phillips and Sarah? More research necessary to conclusively prove.

43. George CALDWELL 1 (Joseph , John , John , William ) was born 1689/1690 in Ballybogan, Lifford Parish, County Donegal, Ireland. He died before 17 Feb 1743 in Buffalo, Prince Edward Co, VA.

Hi Susan, In reading your post, I was reminded that we should always re-post periodically because you never know what new researcher you will find!

I am very interested in your John Caldwell. I too have a connection to the PEC Caldwell's, as my ggg grandfather - Thomas CAldwell/COldwell - owned property there until he sold out in 1772, moving to then Washington County VA (became Hawkins County TN) in about 1777. As you may know, the John and Thomas Caldwell's and Coldwell's of Amelia / PEC and Lunenburg / Charlotte counties were numerous, and I have found them impossible so far to specifically identify. Your information helped me place Sally who married George Mickle 4/19/1798; Elizabeth who married George Wilkerson 12/15/1800; Jane who married John Taggart 12/9/1802; and Thomas who married Betsy Wilkerson 4/16/1804 - all as children of your John Caldwell. I had pulled those marriages from the PEC records but did not have the family group nailed down.

But then, where did this John Caldwell live? I see several different but perhaps contiguous areas where Caldwell's lived in Amelia / PEC ...

1. 1,367 acres on branches of the Buffalo River and Falling Creek. This land was originally owned by George Caldwell (Ibelieve him to be the brother of John Caldwell, the Presbyterian elder). Sons Thomas , Henry, and George received roughly equal shares of this acreage at George's death in 1742, although George had to share his part with his father's wife Sarah as her life estate. Daughters Jean, Mary, and Agnes CLeath received money. Of these 3 sons, George sold his 486 acres, 208 acres in 1757 to William Boyd (now the husband of George's widow Sarah) and 270 acres in 1760 to Thomas Cunningham. George then moved to Bedford County VA. Then 10 years later in 1767, William Boyd sold his 208 acres to a John Caldwell. Is this your John Caldwell? I haven't found how this 208 acres left the osession of the Caldwell's, if indeed it did. Caldwell's are still in the area.

2. 400 acres on both sides of Fort Creek - bought by John Coldwell in 1750, with 20o of it sold to Thomas Coldwell in 1760. Thomas sold out in 1772 and John sold out and moved to Bedford County in 1777.

3. 521 acres on both sides of Fort & Falling Creeks bought by Henry Caldwell (son of George), 419 acres in 1773, 60 acres in 1779, 40 acres in 1789; all of which he sold n 1797 for 1,000 acres in Shelby County KY on Drinking Lick Creek. In his initial acquisition of this acreage, there is a record that he sold - in 1773 - the 460 acres he inherited from his father George. In his 1789 deed, Henry reserved 12 square feet as a burying place where his son John Caldwell is interred.

4. 2,230 acres on Vaughn Creek bought by John Caldwell in 1755. There was a John Caldwell Jr. in this family, to whom John Sr. transferred land in 1762, John Jr. sold out in 1782, destination undeterminable. Other recipients of parcels of this acreage and the from and to years of ownership were Thomas Caldwell (1762-??), David Caldwell (wife Annis) (1764-1792), son-in-law?? Thomas Armstrong (1758-??), son-in-law?? William Finley (wife Mary) (1765-??). The last 300 acres were sold by John & David in 1787.
