According to the 1900 census, the earliest in which I find him, living in Bibb County, he was born in Scotland! Now either the census taker was really sloppy with his notes or maybe old George was having a little fun with the guvmnt. Or something.

He's also listed as a butcher. Now according to Mom he was in the coal business at the time of her birth in 1909, and apparently through 1913. When they moved to Cullman County she says he ran a butcher shop.

In the 1910 census he's in Jefferson County, working as a butcher. He's still saying he was born in Scotland, though now he says his father was born in Ireland, not Scotland as in 1900. Also, where he told the census taker in 1900 that he was 32, in 1910 he said he was 46. Curious.

   George Nelson Butler - Bradford, Illinois ca. 1890 George is the 5th child of John Henry Butler, who was the 1st child of Alexander Butler. Born and raised in Broome Co, NY.
