Birdwell Family History

The documented history of the Bridwell/Birdwell Family of Texas has its beginning in Augusta, Va. (now Botetourt Co., Va.) when GEORGE BIRDWELL, born ca 1720/30 purchased land in the Bend of the James River in 1751 and lived there until 1779 when he purchased land in Sulliivan, NC (now TN) and moved with his family to the Holston River. He died away from home in Bedford Co., Va. in 1781.

George Birdwell is on record in Augusta Co., Va. as being called to Williamsburg in 1745 as a witness to a murder. (probably our Geo.'s father) Another record shows a Sally Birdwell being arrested and punished for smuggleing. A record in 1777 puts a John Birdwell in charge of keeping a road (this later John would not be s/o George who was born in 1770).

George Birdwell is documented as Patriot with the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Work is also being done to establish George for the 17th Century (VII Dames) He has already been established for Colonial dames.

George married twice. The name of his first wife was (unknown) and his second wife was Mary (Looney?). All of his 14 children were born at the Birdwell homestead in the bend of the James river except the first which was probably before reading the James and the last which was born after his arrival upon the Holston. George died away from home in Bedford Co., Va. in 1781. His children as listed in the Birdwell Bible (published Scotland 1767 & owned by Mrs. H. L. Stone's descendants) are listed as follows.

1. Robert Birdwell b. before 1751; Will probated 1818 Giles Co., TN {across the state line from Limestone Co., AL.) Had son Joseph R. that died 1871 in in TX) & son John who's sons Thomas G. & Wm. B. & daughter Mary Eliz. (1/mar. John McCormack; 2/mar. Joseiah Phelps), all died in TX.

4. George Birdwell b. 18 Oct. 1760; mar. Jane Russell; d/o Brice Russell. see 1820 Davidson Co., TN.

5. Elizabeth Birdwell b. 1 June 1764.

6. Benjamine Birdwell b. 21 Dec. 1765; mar 3 March 1791 Mary Perry. See 1830-40 Sullivan Co., TN

7. Joseph Birdwell b. 13 Feb. 1767; died 1 Aug. 1801 Knox Co., TN. Married Rachel Russell: d/o Brice Russell

8.* Moses Birdwell b. 15 Oct. 1769; 1/mar. ?; 2/mar. Hannah Folkinson 1815. Lived 1797 Fr. Co., GA; 1809 Madison Co., AL; 1819-20 Limestone Co., AL; 1830-40 Madison Co., AL; Hopkins Co., TX 1846-49 Died in Hopkins Co., TX 1849. He had 20 children, 10 by each wife.

9. John Birdwell b. 24 Sept. 1770; mar. Mary Allen; moved TX 1838; settled at Old North Church, lived there 2 years, then moved to Mt. Enterprise, Rusk Co., TX. where he died.

10. William Birdwell b. 10 Feb. 1772. Believe Wm. in Jackson Co., TN. 1820.

11. James B. Birdwell b. 29 Aug. 1775. Sullivan Co. TN

12. Joshua Birdwell b. 4 Nov. 1777.
