- ↑ Gertie passed away at the young age of 36 from acute endocrinitis. She is survived by her husband, Nicholas; and three young children, Hester, William Klaas, and August.
Note: Gertie was born 30 April 1881 as Geertje van der Schaaf in the dairy farmers village Winsum (in municipality Baarderadeel, since 1984 part of the new municipality Littenseradiel), in the middle of the Dutch northern province Friesland. Her father, Wiebe van der Schaaf, is then a cattlekeeper (= veehouder, of dairy cow undoubtedly) and mother is Antje Douwes Kuperus.
At the age of 14 years Gertie arrived on 23 March 1896 as Geertje van der Schaaf with her parents and siblings Jacob (21 y, painter), Douwe (20 y, carpenter), Hielkje (18 y), Jan (16 y, baker), Willem (12 y), and Jelle (11 y) on the SS Maasdam at New York, Ellis Island. Their destination was Passaic County in New Jersey.
