He was the son of Henry Deweese and Elizabeth (Hughes) Deweese, both bn PA. (per Family Trees).

He married Susannah Palmer about 1795 in Buncombe, NC. They had nine children.
He was an early Baptist preacher, but became of the free will type, and worked in North Carolina and East Tennessee region with Revs Moses Peterson and John Wheeler. At first they were members of the French Broad Association of Baptists. This Association became divided over the Calvinistic and the Arminian question. The Arminian group led by Rev. Garrett Dewese, was "free will" but practiced close communion. Although the Reverends Peterson and Wheeler agreed with Deweese on the question of the free moral agency of man and they both invited all Christians to the Communion, they agreed to meet with prayer, and settle the questions between them regarding communion. They did that became known as the "Free Will Baptist."

Pioneers from other parts of North Carolina and Virginia settled here, which were of this persuasion, and six small churches were formed, in five counties, in two states, and separated by mountains. These old preachers carried out their "calling" in very difficult circumstances and hardships.
A little later, Rev. Wm. Bonaparte WOOLSEY, joined in and formed the Toe River Association of Free Will Bapt. churches which during his lifetime, grew tremendously.
Not many records exist of Rev. Deweese's detailed ministry, but those available do show he was a faithful man and a leader in his time for his Free Will Baptist church to help serve the spiritual needs of these scattered people.
His son, Levi, also became a minister.
