***Elizabeth Hughes
~1753 - aft 1830
Pennsylvania - Virginia - North Carolina - Kentucky - Tennessee - North Carolina
I know absolutely nothing about Elizabeth before her marriage to Henry Deweese in Philadelphia in 1768 (December 12 - St Michael & Zion Lutheran Church). After that, I know only some things about Henry which presumably apply to Elizabeth as well. Their first child was born in 1769, possibly in Pennsylvania, but possibly in Virginia - it is not known for certain when they settled in Botetourt County (the earliest tax listing I've seen for Henry is 1773). The rest of their eight (possibly nine) children were supposedly all born in Virginia, but I think maybe Henry, the youngest (born 1789) was not.
1785 is the last year I've found Henry on the Virginia tax rolls, and he started acquiring land in North Carolina in 1786. For the 1790 census, they are in North Carolina. His last purchase in North Carolina was in 1798 - after that, he only sold land (last bit sold 1807) - and in 1799, he was on the tax list for Logan County, Kentucky.
Things are murky for a while after that. Henry and Elizabeth may have been in Kentucky for the 1810 census (living with their eldest son John) - or they may have been missed by the census taker. Between 1810-20, there was a general scattering of Deweeses -one son (my line) stayed in the same area of Kentucky for a while, but eventually moved to western Kentucky, one son moved back to North Carolina, several others to Tennessee. It seems that Henry and Elizabeth lived in Tennesse for a while (1820 census), and then moved back to North Carolina (1830 census) - but because the early censuses list only heads of households, it is difficult to know for sure. At any rate, I have not found anyone who might be them after 1830. They would have been quite old by then - Elizabeth possibly 77, Henry 84. For a more complete discussion of all this, please see Henry Deweese's page.
