Township is Santee. Closest post office at Manning. On the previous page is listed James P. Mitchem and his wife, Emeline. Gabriel's mother was a Mitchem/Mitchum. On page 530 is listed Joseph J. Mitchum.
From the 1870 U.S. Census of Clarendon County, we learn that Gabriel owned real estate with a value of 1000 dollars; his personal estate is valued at $300.00. All of the people on this page, as far as I could tell, were born in South Carolina.
Gabriel and his wife Elizabeth have at this period of time, Edward, age 12, Eliza, age 10, Binkey, a daughter, age 8, Caroline, age 6, Elizabeth age 6/12 (born Dec. 1869). Gabriel is age 35 and is a farmer who cannot read or write. Elizabeth is age 34.
It needs to be noted that Gabriel, age 35 on this census, is at odds with the date of birth that I have.
