Facts and Events
Gabriel married a widow, Elizabeth Salome J. Stout Freed at the German REformed Church in Philadelphia on March 3, 1774. It is the church records and marriage license, issued at Philadelphia, that gives the first indication of the present universal spelling of the surname: changing Schwartzlander to Swartzlandeer. After theire marriage, Gabriel and Elizabeth lived and died at what was known for a centure as Swartzlanders Mill, one mile north of Doylestown on Pine Creek. Elizabeth's father was a native of Switzerland who arrived in America in 1737. He purchased the mill in 1770, conveyed it to his son-in-law, Abraham Freed and then to Gabriel upon marrage to his daughter. |
