Murphy, Gabriel B. B. May 18, 1856 Mitchell, Ont, son of Gabriel Murphy (settler). Educ. Logan near Mitchell. Worked on Great Western Railway. Came Mar 1879 Man, arriving Wpg on the 1st train to St. Boniface. Homesteaded near Pine Creek (4 yrs). Town of De Winton located on his prop. Erected warehouse and gen. store (which he rented) & became wheat buyer. Moved 1886 Carberry. Grain purchaser for Ogilvie Milling Co. Started cattle business 1890. In a single year shipped over 6,000 head of cattle from Man. alone. Had ranch at Medicine Hat of 1,200 acres. Leased about 27,000 acres from govt to pasture 2,000 head of stock & grow feed. Owned 2,000 acre near Carberry. Owned another 3,000 acres in different parts of Man. for cultivation & renting. Owned & operated 3 elevators at Carberry, Fairview & Mackenzie (avg. capacity about 35,000 bushels). Establ. a commisison bus in Wpg, trading under G.B. Murphy Co. COF, AOUW. Cons. C.of E.
