Died in Mendota, Dakota County, Minnesota 1895 - enumerated with dau Bertha (Sass) Kautz & family - he is ae 65y 1900 - Fredrich Sass (looks like Loss or Soss) Grandfather - b. Feb 1830, widowed (married 45 years crossed out), immig. 1892 - alien - Laborer (matches date on gravestone …)

Friedrich is the father of Carl Sass. Carl's parents are listed as Fred and Charlotte Mathilde Sass on his marriage registration to Augusta William.

I finally was able to find the Sass family in Neu Kösternitz in Kreis Schlawe. From Bill Krueger: Friedrich is buried in Riverview Cemetery - "there is a tall obelisk-like marker with only his name on it, the dates 2/6/1830 - 3/13/1902 and ( in German) "Rest in Peace". It is a single grave and marker, so I'm sorry to report that it appears that he is not buried with either of his spouses. ... Joachim and Anna Sass' graves - There appears to be some mystery involved, because they are buried in a plot of 6 graves with a very large obelisk marker that bears the name "Hoff". From left to right the foot markers read Charlotte Hoff (with "mother" under the name) 1839-1924, followed by Clara Hoff and the years 1892-1917. The next space is empty. Then Martha Hoff 1890-1904, then Anna Sass (mother) 1831-1902 and Joachim Sass (father) 1821-1910. I have no idea who these Hoff people are, and there is no death certificate for Clara Hoff in Minnesota."

It now appears the Friedrich has a brother, Joachim Sass b. 1820/1821 d.March 29, 1910 in St. Paul? Wife's name: Anna Daughter Mary Ann: b April 4, 1873. Another brother may be Otto Sass.

According to Bill Krueger, family stories have it that the Sass familywas from Pomern and had been in the ship building business, some beingcarpenters and some managers. His father (William) remembers hismother's uncles, Friedrich and Otto - he said that they "were quite baldand that the German they spoke was unintelligible to his father and hisfamily". "They left left the old Polish Corridor area because of toomuch fighting and wars. Joachim and Anna I think wound up in Hamburg...Mary came to this country from Hamburg at age 16 to go to school - something like a finishing school. She was born April 4, 1873 and I don't know where but thought Hamburg. She did not go back to Germany, and due to financial panics, etc. the rest of the family came here. I had a chance to talk with my aunt Harriet before she died, and was able to find out that Mary had settled in Red Wing, Mn. and either worked in or had her own "Ladies Shop", meaning that she made the fancy Victorian dresses and also made the big hats for the properly dressed women of the day. She was married on her 20th birthday, April 4, 1893 in Red Wing to John Gustav Krueger, who was born June 20, 1863 in Baraboo, Wisconsin and grew up in Rochester, Mn. Their children were: Alice, born 4/1/94, William, (my father) born 10/31/95, Harriet, born May 1897, Elinda born 1899, Elmer, born 1903, Howard, born July 1905, Hazel, born 1907, Arthur, born Dec. 1909, Luverne (male) born May 1912 and Eleanor, born 1915 and died 1918. All of these people with the exception of Elinda had children, and all lived to be relatively old to very old again with the exception of Elinda who died in 1960. Now, to tantalize you a little further, my dad said that there were relatives in the "old country" that Mary used to write to. He assumed they were cousins. Correspondence stopped during WW 1 and after the war she was never able to find out what happened to these cousins and never heard from them again. "

another Fred Sass enumerated in Mendota 1895 ae 60y page is not so clear p. 423 he is listed as resident for 6 years (immig. 1889, b. 1835 Germany) and living next door to Bernhard & Margaret (Franzmeyer) Schwanz F. Schwanz (brother of Bernhard?) was a wedding witness for Carl Sass & Bertha Groth in 1888 in Inver Grove … Must be a connection with SASS, SCHWANZ, FRANZMEYER Is this Fred Sass a cousin of Fred/Friedrich b. 1830 (father of Carl) ? --- any connections to
