He was colonel of the Tryon county militia, commanded a regiment under General Herkimer at the battle of Oriskany, and was severely wounded in a fight against Tories and Indians, May 21, 1780. He was appointed brigadier-general by Governor George Clinton, February 6, 1787, for services in the revolutionary war, and was later first judge of the court of common pleas of Montgomery county. In June, 1782, on the occasion of General Washington's visit to Schenectady and at a dinner given in his honor, Colonel Visscher was, at the personal request of Washington, seated at his right hand.
