Details of Homestead File #2912: Application No. 4190 was made at the Land Office at Eau Claire, Wisconsin on 20 June 1876 for the North East Quarter of Section 34 in Township 25 of Range 11 West, containing 160 acres. In an Affidavit on the same date, Frederick stated that he was a married man and a US citizen. He signed both documents and paid the $14 entry fee.
On 30 April 1883, he filed notice of his intention to make final proof in support of his claim on 16 June 1883 before the Register of the US Land Office at Eau Claire. He named four potential witnesses. Accordingly, such notice was posted for thirty days in the Register's office. In addition, it was published for five consecutive weeks begining 4 May 1883 in the Buffalo County Herald, a weekly English Language newspaper printed in Mondovi in Buffalo County, Wisconsin.
On the appointed day, 16 June 1883, Frederick and two witnesses, Calvin Holmes and Bernard Hiland - a neighbor who resided in an adjoining Section of the township, appeared at the Land Office in Eau Claire to prove his claim. Two documents contain his signature: a Final Affidavit Required of Homestead Claimants and his Homestead Proof Testimony. In his testimony, Frederick stated that he was 33 years old and had been born in the state of Wisconsin. He had a wife and three children, and he and his family had resided continuously on the land since first establishing residence there on 17 Oct 1876. Improvements consisted of a frame house 15X21, one story high; two log stables 14X12 & 14X20 respectively; a log granary 14X24, a well 21' deep, and 20 acres broken: all of the value $500. He had cultivated 20 acres for six seasons. He paid the $4 balance of payment due for the land entry, and the Final Receiver's Receipt noted, in addition, that $1.50 Testimony fee was paid.
Final Certificate No. 2912 was issued the same day entitling him to a patent on the tract of land. It was approved 18 July and patented 10 Sep 1883; Recorded, Vol. 6, page 327; Land Office, Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
